Letter for a faulty product (legal guarantee)

Has your product broken down or doesn’t match its description? The seller owes you the legal guarantee of conformity for 2 years. The letter asks for repair or replacement.

🔧 2-year guarantee✓ Repair or replacement✓ France and Belgium

How to send your letter?

By registered mail with acknowledgement of receipt for a cancellation, a formal notice or a notice to leave: it proves the date of sending. In France, use a post office or the official laposte.fr website; in Belgium, a bpost office or post point.

Beware of websites that imitate La Poste or sell “cancellation letters”: some sign you up, in the small print, to a monthly subscription of up to €49.90. Here, the letter is free and you send it yourself.

Why is the letter in French?

Companies, landlords and insurers in France and French-speaking Belgium expect letters in French, and the legal wording (articles of law, standard formulas) is in French. The form is in English to help you fill it in: type your details, the letter writes itself in correct French.

Filling in the letter properly

Always include your references (customer, contract or order number), date and sign the letter, and keep a copy with the proof of sending. Many companies also accept cancellation online or by email: check their terms and conditions.

Nothing is sent over the internet

The letter is created in your browser. Your details never leave your device.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the legal guarantee last?

Two years from delivery for new goods, in France as in Belgium. For second-hand goods, the contract may set a shorter period.

Do I have to prove the defect existed at purchase?

Not at first: a defect that appears shortly after delivery is presumed to have existed at purchase (for 24 months in France for new goods; in Belgium, check the current period on the FPS Economy website). After that, it’s up to you to prove it.

Are these letters really free?

Yes: no sign-up, no subscription, no payment. Print the letter or copy it into an email, then send it yourself.

Are the templates valid in France and Belgium?

Yes: choose your country at the top of the form and the legal wording of the letter adapts. These templates are provided for information only and do not replace legal advice. Check the terms of your contract.
